As part of the Northeastern Workforce Development Board’s (NWDB) Sustainability Initiative, North Carolina State University has developed a Commercial Energy Coordinator training program designed for qualified businesses and organizations in the region. Through a grant from the NWDB, NC State University’s Industrial Extension Service (IES) partners with Energy Solutions, also in the College of Engineering, to facilitate the training that reduces energy and ensures a structured plan for future energy use. Perquimans County Schools (PCS) is the fourth recipient of the funds. PCS includes four schools, one administrative center, and transportation and maintenance buildings. The school system accounts for 1,800 students and spends on average $625,000 annually on utilities, including water and sewer.
PCS has been successful in implementing energy reductions through conservation, education and other low-cost, yet high-efficiency initiatives. The NWDB received a Department of Labor State Energy Sector Partnership Grant to focus on training in renewables and efficiency. Both business employees and unemployed building professionals are trained for current and future positions in the industry.
