Methods Used For Sewer Lateral Inspection

There are various methods adopted by cities to maintain and inspect sewer laterals.  There must be careful assessments and record keeping to determine the necessity of rehabilitating and repairing a sewer line.  If infiltration is a significant issue within your system, it is almost guaranteed that private laterals are a part of the problem. An issue for most municipalities when considering development of a lateral rehabilitation program is whether the cost and effort of the program can be justified by the potential public benefit (e.g., reduced treatment costs, reclaiming capacity, and avoiding sewage overflows). There are numerous examples of municipalities that have implemented an infiltration reduction program and many of them have included private laterals.  There are standard means of detection for problematic areas of the sewer structure, as well as alternative means of discovery.  The differing techniques for detection include: building inspections that will identify uncapped cleanouts.  Smoke testing, which will uncover defective service laterals.  Dye water flooding is an alternate means of discovering faulty pipes and pressure testing will identify both passive and active leaks.  Laterals may also be rehabilitated at the same time as mainline segments, as was done in Davidson County.
